Day 4 - Mental Health Awareness Month (Forgiveness)

Updated: May 23

May the fourth be with you!

Hello and welcome back! May the 4th be with you! Sorry, even though I’m not a huge Star Wars fan, I’d be remiss if I didn’t use that pun today.

On this 4th day of Mental Health Awareness Month, I would like to talk to you about forgiveness. When we have been hurt or offended, it can seem almost impossible to forgive the perpetrator of that hurt or offense. Even the most well-intentioned people may struggle to let go of the pain and, if they are not careful, can end up stuck in a cycle of anger and bitterness.

What we often fail to realize is that forgiveness is not an act of forgetting what or who has hurt us. Nor is it an invitation to that person to hurt us again. Forgiveness is about reclaiming the power that was stripped away from us by the hurt and pain we have endured. It is for your health and well-being and has nothing to do with the other person. When we walk around harboring feelings of anger, vengeance, or whatever else we feel because of the hurt we are not allowing room in our heart for healing to enter.

Who do you need to forgive?

Is it yourself?

Don’t be afraid to consider how much better you will feel by letting go of the heavy burden you’ve been carrying around as you’ve held onto that pain. Forgive and free up some real estate in your mind and heart today.
